Common Mistakes When Using the EMDRIA Find an EMDR Therapist Search

Whether you are searching for an EMDR therapist to refer a client to or to see yourself, you can find a therapist using the EMDRIA Find an EMDR Therapist Search!

Due to a high volume of calls and emails from individuals and members confused by the search, we have made a few changes to the instructions to make it a little easier for you.  Please be aware that the search is not broken, however, like all computer searches, it is very specific. Here are some common mistakes people make when using the EMDRIA Find an EMDR Therapist Search, and ways to avoid them:

1. Suburban Areas: In large urban areas there are often several cities that clients are willing to drive to in order to see a therapist. For example, in Dallas, TX a client might be interested in seeing a therapist in Dallas, Richardson or Plano. If you search specifically for Dallas, you will ONLY get results for Dallas, not any of the suburbs or nearby cities.  To avoid this we recommend you search by zipcode and then select a driving radius, that way you can encompass all of the cities they are willing to drive to.

2. Abbreviations: Abbreviations often cause the search to yield zero results, so please avoid them EXCEPT when specifying a state, in which case you MUST use the two letter state abbreviation (ex., TX). So, New York City would be New York, NY.

3. Highly Populated Areas: Currently there are 176 EMDRIA Therapists in New York, NY. In a case like this, it is best to search based on zip code and leave “0” for driving radius and if you would like, to narrow results by selecting only Certified Therapists or Approved Consulants.

4. Too Many Fields: In the case of this search, more is NOT better.  We recommend that on your first try you only fill in ONE field and if you get too many results, go back and fill in a second, and so on.

Please note that if you receive “0” results, there might be an error in your search, or there might not be any therapists that meet your specifications. Try again with less fields filled in or with a different field completed and make sure that you are following all instructions. If you still do not get any results it is likely that there are no therapists that meet your specifications.

As always, you can call the EMDRIA office for help with the Find an EMDR Therapist Search and the website in general. Happy searching!
